Detective Sergeant Andrew Raven, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said police received a report the man suffered the injuries during a car accident in Allansford at 6am on Sunday.
An ambulance was called and the man was transported to the Warrnambool Base Hospital where he was assessed and treated.
The man was then flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Sunday where this morning he remains in a critical but stable condition.
Detective Sergeant Raven said police do not not believe the man was involved in a car accident.
"We believe he was lured from his Allansford house and seriously assaulted person known to him," he said.
"We are continuing to seek information from any members of the public about how this man suffered these significant and potentially life-threatening head injuries," he said.
"We do not believe they were received as a result of a vehicle collision, but we don't know the circumstances in which they were suffered."

"We are urgently seeking additional information into the circumstance surrounding this man suffering these extensive and potentially life-threatening injuries," Detective Sergeant Raven said.
