The town's Country Fire Authority captain Garth Palmer said firefighters attended the blaze this week at Beach Street, Port Fairy where the light caused $1000 worth of damage.
"In summer time you don't need to warm the bathroom up, but at this time of year people don't check the dust in the back of them," Mr Palmer said.
He said the brigade was called to about three similar fires each year as the weather cooled.
"We went and checked two other people we knew yesterday and there was a lot of dust," Mr Palmer said.
He said it was also timely for people to change smoke alarm batteries, clean flues and check heaters.
