The COVID-19 crisis has not grounded the Warrnambool Bus Lines fleet, with the full staff of over 70 drivers still on the road.

Warrnambool Bus Lines runs services seven days a week across the city, as well as a route to Port Fairy, via Koroit.

The services are delivered by Warrnambool Bus Lines as a contractor for the state government, with public transport listed as an essential service.

Managing director of Warrnambool Bus Lines Stephen Lucas said measures were been taken to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers.

"Our drivers haven't been taking cash for some time now, all payments are done on card," Mr Lucas said.

"We have been separating as much as we can, the passengers get it and everyone has been really sensible and aware of their responsibilities so it hasn't been an issue.

"The buses are being regularly sanitised and the drivers sanitise their own space throughout the day.

"We are giving drivers advice on the best way to safely deal with the situation."

Like many services in the COVID-19 age, the demand has fallen.

Mr Lucas said because it was an essential service, there was more than just the volume of passengers to consider.

"They aren't as many people on the routes, but for many of those that are still getting on the buses it is the only form of transport they have," Mr Lucas said.

"Buses are an important way for some people to get around and do what they need."

Mr Lucas said his company would have discussions with the state government as to what the bus services would look like when the COVID-19 crisis ends.

He said there would not be a one size fits all because the needs of each city and town would be different.

As well as its public routes, Warrnambool Bus Lines also services schools in the district.

Mr Lucas said the impact on the service after the state government's decision to make school attendance optional would be monitored.

"At the moment all our school services are still operating," Mr Lucas said.

"Obviously we will be working closely with the schools as time goes on."
