Incident controller and Westmere group officer Tim Blomeley said he was called to the fire at a home on the Darlington-Carranballac Road just before 6am.

"The cause of the fire is unknown," he said.

"Everything is under control, we are waiting for an excavator to turn up to remove the roof to stop the fire in there.

"The house has been totally engulfed."

Mr Blomeley said no one was injured in the blaze and the person living in the house had escaped.

"The person who lived in the house was a worker on the nearby property," he said.

He described the house as "beyond a renovator's delight" after the fire.

Warrnambool Fire Brigade's aerial pumper was also called to the fire about 8.45am to help assist, more than three hours after the blaze started.

Mr Blomeley said about 25 volunteers worked to stop the fire, with breathing apparatus used by firefighters.

Darlington, Derrinallum, Lismore, Pura Pura, Dundonnell, Mortlake and Noorat brigades attended.

He said it was a timely warning with the end of daylight saving for people to check their smoke alarms and change its batteries.

He also warned homeowners to check heaters and chimney flus for any hazards.
