Hamilton police Sergeant Rex Habel said the incident occurred about 7am on Tuesday.

"There is a currently HAZMAT incident involving a truck on the eastern side of Dunkeld on the Glenelg Highway," he said.

"It was not a collision but there is an oil spill and police and a fire brigade unit are attending the scene."

It is not yet known if there are road closures in place.
