The Ipswich electorate of Bundamba and the Gold Coast electorate of Currumbin are up for grabs in by-elections on Saturday.

Both seats have similar back stories, with female MPs retiring at the start of the year.

Labor's Jo-Ann Miller (Bundamba) and the LNP's Jann Stuckey (Currumbin) both took swipes at their own party as they left the political arena.

Ms Miller was critical of Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, describing her as a "four letter word" in the lead-up to her resignation.

Ms Stuckey was highly critical of her party's nominee to contest the seat, Laura Gerber, who had only recently joined the party and moved to the region.

Ms Stuckey said she believed lawyer Chris Crawford should have been given the opportunity, and accused the party-elite of bullying.

Both elections will not change the government but they will have ramifications in the lead up to October's state election.

Bundamba has been held by Labor since it was first contested in 1992.

While it is considered a safe seat for the government, a big drop in the primary vote will send shock waves through the party.

Similarly, Currumbin is a vital seat for the LNP.

The party has held it since 2004, however, it only held the seat by 3.3 per cent in 2017.

Losing Currumbin on Saturday will make the job for Opposition leader Deb Frecklington and her team much harder come October.
