Marcia and Jim Forrest were to open up their property to host the wedding of their eldest daughter Annie to Alastair Templeton.

While weddings are not on the banned list of gatherings put out by the state government to deal with the COVID-19 crisis, the Forrest and Templeton families are taking a cautious approach.

Marcia Forrest said while the wedding postponement was disappointing, the safety of guests was paramount.

"We were expecting about 100 people and the service and the reception were going to be here at home," Mrs Forrest said.

"Even with the state government decision we have still decided to postpone, there is just too much that could go wrong.

"What happens if there were 30 people up on the dancing floor at one time?

"It would be too hard to police and it would be terrible if someone got sick."

Mrs Forrest said the wedding invitation list included people from overseas and interstate.

Mr Templeton is coach of the West Warrnambool Cricket Club, with the club's former star English import, Jack Sunderland, among those invited but now not making the trip from the UK.

Mrs Forrest said the decision had been made prior to the postponement that some elderly family members in aged care facilities would not be attending to protect their health.

"We think it is a much better decision to postpone so those elderly and people coming from overseas and interstate can still attend," Mrs Forrest said.

The newlyweds to-be sent the following message to their wedding guests on Monday afternoon:

"Due to the recent circumstances we are absolutely devastated to say that we have to postpone our big day.

"Once we have a new date we will be in touch.

"We are excited to have a bigger and better wedding in the future. Thank you for your support and understanding."

The couple showed it had maintained a sense of humour despite the setback, with the note to guests entitled "A Twist in Plans" with an accompanying photo of a Corona beer bottle with a lime coming out the top.

Weddings and funerals were posted on Sunday as part of the banned gatherings but were taken off the list on Monday.
