Police, CFA and SES members were called to the scene at 12.25pm on Monday after reports the 51-year-old was trapped in the plane.
Koroit Sergeant Pat Day said the fixed-wing aeroplane left Moorabbin and encountered strong crosswinds when the Melbourne pilot attempted to land in Warrnambool.
He said the cessna fixed-wing crashed into a large drain ditch and the pilot got out uninjured.
"He was checked by paramedics and a bit shaken up but there were no injuries," he said.
Sergeant Day said there was extensive damage to the undercarriage and possible damage to the motor.
