Black Heart Bart runs in the $5 million All-Star Mile - the richest 1600-metre race in the world - at Caulfield on Saturday.
Smith, who also has stables in Perth, said he was quietly confident his old warrior would run well in the second running of the race.
"Black Heart Bart is in great shape," he said.
"The All-Star Mile was the race we've had in the back of our minds for months.
"Black Heart Bart is in good spirits and I'm confident he'll run an honest race.
"He's not the roughest chance. I think people have forgotten how good his record is at Caulfield.
"He's got an exceptional record at Caulfield and his second up record is very good. "
Black Heart Bart rounded off his preparation for the All-Star Mile with a good strong track gallop over 1000 metres at Camperdown earlier this week.
Lightly-raced Ciaron Maher-trained galloper Heart Of Pussiance squeezed his way into the field for the All-Star Mile.
Heart Of Pussiance has won two races from his four starts.
Maher, who trains in partnership with David Eustace, has numerous other runners at the Caulfield meeting.
Local trainer Simon Ryan saddles up Grandview Avenue while Aaron Purcell's Guizot is in a listed race.
