The 16-year-old just took out the Port Campbell Board Riders' under 16 title for the second-straight year and wants to develop further.

"I'll go over to Indo next year hopefully, go over there for about two weeks and just surf," he said.

The Port Campbell resident believes he can gain plenty from the trip.

"Just the experience of a new place, different culture, different waves and warm water," he said.

The Timboon P-12 student said he had some good fortune on his way to the board riders title.

"I managed to pick up what was probably the wave of the day and get a high score," he said.

Ned received a big cheer from onlookers when he caught it. He manged to beat a competitive field.

"I've got a few friends and we're all pretty evenly-matched in skill, it's a competitive bunch" he said.

"We've got some mates that come down from Torquay and compete."

The youngster, who has been part of the South West Academy of Sport since 2018, has been working on a few aspects his surfing.

"Just maybe extending bottom turns and getting high on the wave," he said.

"Just extending bottom turns into big snaps."

Ned has benefited from surfing sessions with former professional surfer Adam Robertson, who hails from Portland.

Robertson films athletes surfing and provides feedback about points for improvement and technique.

"It's great because he takes us through stuff in a really detailed way," Ned said.

"He's really helpful."

Ned, who has been surfing since he was four years old, has spent more time riding waves in recent years.

He's on the Rip Curl Research and Development Team and tests the brand's prototype wetsuits.

The teenager has to log his surfing and report about the wetsuits every 20 hours.

He's clocked up 61 hours in the water since late January.

The regular-footed surfer doesn't have any events coming up but he'll strive to keep improving.

"I just do it to get as good I can with surfing and just see where it takes me," he said.

Ned surfs all-year-round and he's multi-talented.

He won Timboon Demons' under 15s best and fairest award in 2019 in the Warrnambool and District football league.

Boxing is also a passion and he's keen to fight in the future. He's training and sparring at Rudy's Boxing.

Swimming is the fourth sport he puts time into and he enjoyed success at a recent inter-school championships.

"I'll keep trying to do as many sports as I can but in the years to come, I'll probably have to focus on a specific one," he said.

Regardless, there's one sport he'll never stop.

"I'll always find time to surf," he said.
