Luke Knight, 38, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court to possessing cannabis and theft of a bicycle.
Police were called to reports of a man allegedly hiding in bushes and acting suspiciously just before 3am on Saturday.
Sergeant Paul Stanhope said the man, who had failed to appear in court on separate charges, allegedly ran from police.
"It was a bit of a long chase, the police who attended got into a foot chase with him," he said.
Sergeant Stanhope said the chase started in Thompson Street, where an officer had to jump a fence, through Gray Street and back alleyways, back to Gray Street, then down Kennedy Street where the man was cut off by a police car after 3am.
Knight was found in possession of .04 grams of cannabis and subsequently arrested.
At the time of the offending he was on bail for stealing a bicycle from Hamilton's Alexandra House on January 24.
He was sentenced to the two days he had already served in custody and he was fined $500.
