Butt now the family's name will forever be etched Royal Bikes Port Campbell to Warrnambool history after Des Lane took out inaugural overall and masters victories in the new handicap event.

Des and his sons Sam and Matt have all raced in the Melbourne to Warrnambool, the former completing seven editions of the 125-year-old race.

The Warrnambool resident, who finished ahead of Camperdown pair John Pearson and Bryce Morden, was pleased to take out the win after starting with the 33-minute bunch.

"It was pretty tough but I had a good working bunch for most of the way," he said.

"It was a great course and I can see a big future for this race. There was a bit of southerly wind which was chopping the bunch a bit but apart from that it was quite good.

"We got a bit of cover through the trees and there were some little rest points."

Lane said he had no expectations heading into the ride after battling sickness during his preparations but it didn't seem to bother him as he held out in a sprint to the line.

"I had been training but hadn't had a race since May because I had been a little bit crook," he said.

"I have had a bit of a chest infection and I am suppose to go to the doctor next week so it will be interesting to see what he has got to say."

John Watkinson completed the 76-kilometre distance the fastest after starting with the scratch bunch.

Stephanie Hibburt, who started with the first bunch at 33-minute, and Robert Hibburt, who started with the 22-minute group, were the first woman and junior under 19 riders to cross the line on Raglan Parade.
