Hugh McCluggage was elevated to the Lions' nine-player leadership team on Thursday.

The South Warrnambool export joins former Adelaide and Gold Coast midfielder Jarryd Lyons as a first-time member.

Lyons is entering his second season at the Lions.

McCluggage, 21, has played 63 games in his first three years in Brisbane colours after landing at the club as a highly-touted midfielder via pick three in the national draft.

"It is a privilege to be recognised by your peers as someone who is trusted to help lead the players during an exciting period of time for our club," he said.

McCluggage said the large leadership group boasted different skill-sets which would help the Lions improve on their 2019 straight sets finals exit.

"It's a nice big group. Nine very different guys and it's important to have different types of leaders," he said.

It opens up the group to different discussions and having a range of ages really helps."

Game-changing midfielder Dayne Zorko will again captain the club with defender Harris Andrews his deputy.

Darcy Gardiner, Stefan Martin, Lachie Neale, Ryan Lester and Jarrod Berry, who was drafted the same year as his close mate McCluggage, make up the leadership group.
