The 36-year-old fired his second four-under round of 68 to head into the the final round of the US PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines at eight-under.
He sits tied for seventh spot, four shots behind 2017 winner and current leader Spaniard Jon Rahm.
A shot back of Leishman is Tiger Woods, who kept his hopes of a record 83rd PGA Tour title alive with a round of 69.

Leishman hit 12 of 18 greens in regulation during his third round. His 18 holes on Sunday saw him nail six birdies - three on the front and three on the back nine.
The Warrnambool export could have been within two shots of Rahm if not for two bogeys on his way back to the clubhouse.
Two-time event winner Jason Day shot an even-par 72 to remain at four under and is tied with countryman Aaron Baddeley (69).
