Detective Senior Constable Craig Wastell, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said a 42-year-old male was at his Lawrence Street home with his 84-year-old mother when he heard a knock at the front door about 10pm on Thursday.
"The son attended at the front door where there were three unknown males standing on the verandah," he said.
"The three males have then assaulted the victim who suffered head injuries."
Detective Senior Constable Wastell said the elderly mother went outside to check on her son and was also assaulted.
"She also suffered head injuries," he said. "The pair were conveyed to Camperdown Hospital where they were received stitches.
"They are clearly very distraught and upset. Particularly given their injuries which required treatment."
One of the intruders is believed to have been carrying a weapon.
Detective Senior Constable Wastell said the alleged offending was very serious.
"It is very disturbing," he said.
"The mother and son were just at home by themselves and don't appear to have any reason to be assaulted. There is no indication as to why this would have occurred."
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information should contact Detective Senior Constable Craig Wastell at Warrnambool police station on 5560 1333 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
