The terrified victim, a 25-year-old Warrnambool man, said he was driving his white Holden Commodore towards the intersection of McGregors Road and Wanstead Street when four hooded males attacked his car around 11.30pm on Friday night.
Warrnambool Sergeant Angela Fitzgerald said the men were not known to the victim.
"He said four people ran out on Wanstead Street and stood in the middle of the road causing him to slow down," she said.
"One of the offenders smashed the windscreen and drivers' side window with what looked to be a cricket bat.
"The victim has then driven off in fear of being attacked and called police. It would have been pretty frightening."
The male wielding the cricket bat was described by the victim as six foot tall, of medium build and bald with a grey hoodie.
The other three were described as wearing dark-coloured hoodies. One had shoulder-length hair which the victim was unsure was male or female.
Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the incident or who may have been in the area at the time to contact Senior Constable David McPhail at Warrnambool Police Station on 5560 1121.
