WESTERN DISTRICT Bowls Division chairperson Maureen Drennan says the players with the best mental resolve will prove hard to beat in the competition's champion of champions.
Nine male and nine women's club champions will put everything on the line at Mortlake Bowls Club over the next two weekends to be crowned the best singles players in the region.
The event starts with the preliminary rounds of the knockout competition this Saturday and is followed by the semi-finals and final next Sunday.
The champion of champions will then represent the WDBD at the regional championships in Camperdown in early February.
Kevin Boyd, Brenda Hawker (Warrnambool), Blackie Lenehan, Jan Morgan (Koroit), Arthur Finch, Gillian Vorwerk (Timboon), Neville Swanson, Polly Rabl (Dennington), Kevin Johnson, Bev Fleming (Terang), David McNicoll, Marjery Whitson (Mortlake), David Wells, Julie Dosser (City Memorial), Nick Seekamp, Pam Gibb (Port Fairy), Peter Verdon and Dorothy Kile (Lawn Tennis) are the champions representing their clubs.
Drennan, a previous women's champion of champion and six-time Dennington representative, said a strong mentality was key to any drive for success at the annual championship.
"The main thing is you have to prepare yourself to beat the opposition bowl and if you play well you will hopefully win," she said.
"Obviously mental preparation is important. Some may have lucky charms that they use and others would use mental preparation.
"Singles is a very mental game, it's more mental than physical. You need to be able to concentrate for a long period of time."
Drennan said City Memorials' David Wells and Timboon pair Arthur Finch and Gillian Vorwerk were strong chances with some impressive form under the belts heading into the championship.
"All the players have had a great year and they have all bowled well and deserve to be there," she said of the playing field.
