Mr Sell said his home had been targeted by thieves who stole a basketball ring set from the front of his home overnight on Saturday.

The base of the ring was filled with several hundred kilograms of water and he said it would have been very difficult to move.

"The ring has been there for years. The kids play on it every day," he said.

"It's also bloody heavy. I filled it up last week and there was no sign it was drained before it was stolen.

"I think it would have taken more than a ute to move and two or three people to carry it."

Mr Sell said his three sons, aged 10, 17 and 20 were not happy.

"They are a bit disappointed about what's happened," he said.

"We would just ask that anyone who knows anything about the break-in contact police."

Earlier: Police are baffled after a full-size basketball ring set was stolen from out the front of a house in Warrnambool's Bromfield Street overnight on Saturday.

Detective Senior Constable Joe Fisher, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said the basketball ring set base was stabilised with water weighing several hundred kilograms.

"There was no trace the water had been emptied, so it's a bit weird that's it's been able to be taken away. More than one person would have had to be involved," he said.

"The basketball ring was out the front of the house and a road bike and golf clubs were also taken from a garage.

"The value of the goods was just under $3000."

Detective Senior Constable Fisher said that overnight Friday a yellow Pee Wee 50cc motorbike worth $500 was stolen from a shed in McGregors Road, Warrnambool.
