Detective Senior Constable Tim Chester, of the Portland police crime investigation unit, said the Warrnambool man in his 20s was assaulted early Saturday morning and flown to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.
He said the man was placed in an induced coma on life support on Saturday and Sunday before being going into intensive care unit.
"He's now been discharged from hospital," he said.
"He's got a fracture in his lower back, a broken nose and lacerations to his face and hands caused by bites."
Detective Senior Constable Chester said the men involved in the incident had been drinking at a hotel and then later at a Portland address.
He said they argued and the accused man claimed to police the victim was asked to leave after suggesting a threesome with a housemate.
That led to the men exchanging blows and the serious assault.
Monday: Police allege a Portland man suffered serious injuries and is in an induced coma at a Melbourne hospital after an argument about a proposed threesome.
Warrnambool police Sergeant Ben Timpson said a number of people had been drinking at a Portland hotel on Friday night before going to an address in the city where they continued consuming alcohol.
He said it was then allegedly suggested people at the house be involved in a threesome.
There was a verbal argument which led to punches being exchanged about 7am.
The victim went to ground, the 58-year-old accused allegedly jumped on top of him and continued a sustained attack, he said.
The victim suffered serious head and facial injuries, an ambulance was called about 7.30am and he was transported to the Portland Base Hospital for assessment and treatment.
He was then placed in an induced coma and flown to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. The accused, who had fled the scene and then returned, was arrested by police, interviewed and charged with recklessly causing serious injury.
He appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court at midday on Monday and made no application for bail.
The man had visible bruises and swelling to his face. Lawyer Morgan Adams said his client had a possible broken nose.
The man was remanded in custody and will appear in court for a further mention on February 17 next year. Anyone with information should contact Crimestoppers 1800 333 000.
