Tayla Philis and her boyfriend Harrison Hunt, from Adelaide, took out their respective 120 metres races at the Warrnambool Gift on Saturday.

Hunt said he was motivated to win after watching Philis win her thrilling women's final.

"It's awesome," he said with a smile.

"I saw her win it ten minutes before I was running and I was like ' I can't let her take all the fame'.

"So I gave it all I could and came out on top."

Hunt finished in an adjusted time of 12.378 off a handicap of 2.5 metres ahead of scratch.

The fourth year apprentice carpenter stormed to victory on the back of a strong start.

The 20-year-old, who also won the 70m open event, was surprised to win given he was the backmarker.

"I didn't actually think I could do it but I knew if I got a good start I'd be up in the top three," he said.

Hunt, who lives in suburb Golden Grove, edged out Ryan Ilett and Lachlan Sheffield.

Philis, 22, had to fight until the end to beat Ebony Lane.

She finished in an adjusted time of 13.649 off a handicap of 6.5 metres ahead of scratch.

The Morphett Vale-based sprinter said it was her first major victory.

"I knew it was going to be a tough gift," she said.

"But I knew if I could hold her off for that first part I would make it through."

Lauren Edwards took third-place.

Philis said she did her best to calm her nerves before the big race.

"I was a bit nervous going into it, I was doubting myself a little bit," she said.

"But I just pictured my own race and I'm happy to get through it.

"My squad has been really good, they're my biggest support network and they were just being as supportive as they could."

Philis and Hunt are coached by Paul Young and are part of the Young Guns Track Squad.

Philis, who is studying to be a primary school teacher, said she planed to run at the Terang Gift on Sunday.

"I'll hopefully be running the 70 metres and potentially the 120," she said.

"I'll see how I pull up tomorrow."

Philis she started sprinting in Little Athletics when she was nine years old.

Hunt will run in the men's 120m event at the Terang Gift on Sunday.

The men's winner said he trained at least six times a week for about two hours a day.

The fleet-footed athlete also won the $13,500 prize at The Bay Sheffield in South Australia in 2018.
