A Warrnambool man has been remanded in custody charged with allegedly seriously assaulting a woman who remains in hospital with life-threatening head and spinal injuries.

Paul McDonough, 37, appeared briefly in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Thursday. He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until March 27 for a committal mention.
He was charged with intentionally and recklessly causing serious injury following an investigation involving Warrnambool police and Victorian homicide squad detectives.
The female victim, who was allegedly assaulted in her Ocean Grove unit in the city's east overnight Tuesday, remains on life support in the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
The woman's condition was reported as having improved yesterday after she was flown to the hospital on Wednesday.
