The co-coach is plotting the downfall of Dennington on Saturday as the Tigers eye a climb back to finals calculations.
Burgess was positive his eighth-placed side can salvage its season - but was under no illusions of how difficult it would be.
Merrivale finished just outside the top four last season but is yet to register a win in the new campaign.
"I don't see us as a bottom three side, but we have to start winning now," he said.
"It's going to be an uphill battle. But just that first win on the board would give the boys a lot of confidence that we're on the right track.
"I feel we've got a good list but it's just about the boys getting that belief that we can get to where we want to be."
Burgess said clashes with both Dennington and Wesley-CBC in coming weeks could shape Merrivale's season.
