Brian McKenzie, 26, previously of Garvoc and now of Warrnambool, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Friday where he made a self-represented bail application.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Paul Harris said Mr McKenzie was at his brother's house in Garvoc on Thursday when they began arguing about money about 9am.
He said the victim was lying on the couch when Mr McKenzie stood over him with a 38cm-long machete and yelled: "I'm going to kill you."
The prosecutor said the victim grabbed the machete, causing a cut to his index finger.
The pair then wrestled on the couch.
The victim allegedly wrapped his legs around the accused's neck, causing the machete to cut his left big toe.
The court heard the accused also pinned his brother up against a door before punching a fishing knife into the wood - about seven centimetres from the victim's head.
Mr McKenzie was arrested at an address in Warrnambool's Crawley Street about 6pm.
When asked to provide compelling reasons why he should be released from custody, Mr McKenzie told the court he had no intention of going back to the victim's property and had plans to communicate with his kids and send them presents.
He said he would reside at the Crawley Street property he was arrested at.
But magistrate Michael Coghlan refused to accept the accused had a stable address unless he spoke to the owner of the property.
The application was adjourned until Monday and the man was remanded in custody until that day.
