A team from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has undertaken an expedition in search of the rare Pretty Leek Orchid (Prasophyllum anticum).
DELWP Barwon South West Natural Environment Officer Laura Prentice said her team combined with representatives from the Basalt to Bay Landcare Network to comb through a section of native grassland north of Port Fairy.
"During this year's survey, 36 flowering orchids were counted, however that's not necessarily the total number present," Ms Prentice said.
"The Pretty Leek Orchid is a tricky species to monitor as it has an interesting life cycle.
"We know that it can remain dormant below the ground for some years.
"Sometimes the orchid might emerge and flower for a couple of years in a row, and sometimes it might have a rest for quite a few years."
