Smith's club boasts teams in both under 14 and under 17 Warrnambool and District Cricket Association female leagues ahead of the season launch on Wednesday.

The Broncos are without juniors boys' teams. Smith said his club's focus was currently entirely with the development of female cricketers.

"It's definitely a growing area," Smith said.

"It's harder and harder to get junior boys teams in that some teams have lots of numbers and others have none.

"It's a bit of a chore to get boys to play sport sometimes. While boys are backing off a bit, girls are really wanting to play cricket."

Smith said East Warrnambool was close to fielding two under 14 sides and that female cricket had contributed to a feel-good atmosphere at the club.

"With the girls cricket, you get mums who want to come down and be involved as well as the dads," he said.

"We're focused on the girls because at the moment they are our junior program. We want to put the time into them to help them develop as players."

East Warrnambool faces Port Fairy in the under 14 competition, while its under 17 side battles Brierly-Christ Church.

The South West Cricket Association side, which features girls from around the rival league, has the bye in the under 17s.
