But the region's new sporting craze is set to shake things up, with six rugby teams to play on the Rodger Henderson Oval during the Limestone Coast Rugby League competition.
Purnim Recreation Reserve secretary Peter McDonald said no football had been played at the reserve since 1987, and no tennis for nearly two decades.
"With no local schools, hotel, general store or post office, the rec reserve is considered the social hub of the local community," he said.
"This has been a massive decision to allow rugby to play at our venue during cricket season but our committee has looked outside the square of another user of our facilities.
"If we thought there'd be any negative impact on our playing surface or facilities for cricket then this wouldn't have proceeded.
"We're optimistic it's going to be a win-win for all parties involved."
The Limestone Coast Rugby League will play alongside the Grassmere Cricket Association, with Purnim and Grassmere cricket clubs being the current co-tenants of the reserve.
Mr McDonald said there were a lot of logistics in scheduling two additional fixtures during the cricket season.
A late withdraw from the A Grade cricket division meant there was no longer a bye for the rugby league to utilise.
"It has caused some headaches," Mr McDonald said.
The rugby fixture will now see all six teams compete at Purnim on October 26, and the best four on December 7 during the semi-final.
Rugby teams will travel to Purnim from Horsham, Naracoorte and Mount Gambier.
Moyne Shire Councillor Jim Doukas said the competition was a great way to showcase Purnim and the shire.
"It really puts us on the map and will help in future funding grants," he said.
"We can show state and federal governments that we have all these people coming to Purnim.
"It also shows a lot of cooperation between councils. We've got neighbouring councils saying 'we can go to Moyne, they've got good facilities'.
"It's not all about us, it's about sharing what we've got."
