Hunni's Cafe in Liebig Street was opened by Hunnah James four-and-a-half years ago.
She was new to the city and walked past the former Savoy cafe and was inspired to make it her own.
"It looked really sad and I wanted to do something with it," Mrs James said.
"We wanted to create something fun and bright and relaxing."
Over the years Mrs James said most clients had become more like friends than paying customers.
It is for that reason the decision to close was not an easy one.
"We had a five year lease and that's almost up and the owner is considering selling it," Mrs James said.
"Plus, I'm having a baby."
Mrs James, her husband Aaron and their three sons Louis, 11, Cooper, 10, and Harry, 7, are set to add a new addition to their family in a couple of months.
"It was a really hard decision to make," she said.
"I've made some great friends and I'd just like to say thanks to all our customers.
"Next week is going to be really hard."
When asked about the future, Mrs James said she wasn't planning on opening another cafe, but wouldn't totally rule out the possibility.
"Maybe, we'll see," she said.
In the meantime, Mrs James said she would enjoy a break in the city the family has come to love.
"I'm going to enjoy the summer not working in hospitality," she said.
Hundreds of people took to the cafe's Facebook page to express their disappointment at the cafe's closure.
"Thanks for the fun times," Ange Zahn wrote.
"We always loved your waffles and always enjoyed the card games while we wait for our meals."
"Good luck with your next adventure," wrote Elizabeth Grant.
"We travelled from Benalla to enjoy your food and milkshakes."
