Mullen, the Cobras co-captain this season, has signed with the Roosters for next season after being courted by numerous Hampden league clubs.

The 25-year-old said he was excited to join the Roosters.

"It seemed like a really good culture," he said.

"It sort of reminded me of Bacchus a fair bit, a fairly young list with a good culture."

The backman, who became renowned for his shutdown roles in the Ballarat Football League, said he knew Roosters' co-captain Liam Youl who went to school in Ballarat.

Mullen, who was in the Cobras' 2016 BFL premiership team, said he saw similarities between his group that season and South Warrnambool.

He said the Cobras had plenty of young players who had been playing together for years.

Mullen, who has played with Bacchus Marsh since he was seven years old, said his former club had 16 one-point players that season.

He said he believed South Warrnambool to be in a similar position.

Mullen said the Cobras had a major breakthrough that season because they hadn't made finals for 15 years.

The premiership player, who is moving to Warrnambool to be closer to his fiancée Jess, said he was looking forward to the change.

"I never saw myself playing for a different footy club, it was daunting at first," he said.

But he said he was excited now that the wheels were in motion.

Mullen, who co-captained the Cobras for the first-time this season and played 17 matches, will bring plenty of leadership experience to the young Roosters.

He said he took pride in providing on-field leadership.

Mullen, who has already lined up a job, will move to Warrnambool at the end of October and is raring to go for pre-season.

The plumber added joining a footy club would be a great way to integrate into his new city.

Roosters coach Mat Battistello said he was thrilled to have Mullen on board.

"Absolutely, we're most excited about the fact he's 25, been captain of his local club and played 150 games," he said.

"He's the type of person our young group needs."

Battistello said he was excited about the leadership Mullen would bring to the side.

The Roosters mentor said Mullen would set the standard with his training and bring on-field guidance to the Roosters' young defenders.

"He'll have a fairly big ripple effect on our back-six," he said.

Battistello added he had a great core group that embraced new players.
