The world number 24 copped a golf ball to his back during a pro-am event on Wednesday.
The errant shot, which hit the Australian on the right-hand side of his back, flared up a previous injury concern.
Leishman opted to play in the PGA Tour event at The Greenbrier but withdrew after firing a six-over par 76 in the opening round.
"I can't blame anything I did today on that," the humble Australian told Golf Digest.
"But it did hurt at the time. I was good until yesterday.
"This is frustrating, yeah. I was looking forward to getting the season off to a good start."
