Hoysted's training record is unparalleled in the history of Victorian racing, having won a record 17 premierships between 1933 and 1958, and the trainers in contention to claim the award named in his honour are Charlie Appleby, Tony McEvoy, Adam Trinder, Chris Waller and Payne.
From thousands of training performances on Victorian racetracks last season, the following five were considered the most outstanding by the judging panel, comprising members of the racing media.

Payne was nominated for training Zed Em, who carried 70 kgs to win the 2019 Grand Annual after he finished a close second to Gold Medals in 2018.
Zed Em's win is Payne's fourth Grand Annual Steeplechase victory in seven years.
His other Grand Annuals winners are Awakening Dream, Chaparro and No. Song No Supper.
Charlie Appleby became the first English trainer to win the Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) when Cross Counter passed more rivals in the straight than any Cup winner since Kiwi, in 1983.
Tony McEvoy's performance to train Sunlight to became the first three-year-old filly since Alinghi, in 2005, to win the Newmarket Handicap earnt him a nomination.
Mystic Journey's effort to win The All-Star Mile saw Tasmania trainer Adam Trinder short listed for the coveted award while champion trainer Chris Waller was nominated for training the mighty mare Winx to win her fourth Cox Plate.
