Hinkley has a clause in his contract, which expires at the end of 2021, that stipulates it's make the finals or he won't get the chance to serve the last year of his deal.
The 10th-placed Power are outsiders to sneak into the finals this year, needing to win their home match against Fremantle on Sunday and hope other results fall their way.
"I'm quite happy to say that my contract has clauses in it ... if you don't perform, you don't deserve to get those add-ons of a contract," Hinkley said.
"From my point of view, I'm more than comfortable and accept the responsibility of performance.
"At the time when I signed the contract, if I don't perform and as a club we don't perform that well, it's probably that time.
"I'm quite happy to say that if we don't make finals, I won't be the coach of the football club in the near future.
"But that is what it should be, that's what we set out to be.
"I'm very comfortable that I will fulfill the entire part of my contract and possibly more if that's what we can do as a football club."
Hinkley was appointed Port coach for the 2013 season and took the club into the finals in his first two seasons.
But the Power have reached the playoffs just once in the past four years, when beaten in an elimination final.
Port's finals hopes for this year suffered a massive dent last weekend when thumped by 86 points by North Melbourne.
Hinkley was an All-Australian half-back for Geelong and a back-to-back premiership coach at Camperdown.
