The Seagulls recorded a three-goal win on Saturday to draw level with South Warrnambool, the Bloods and Camperdown on 24 points with five rounds to play.
Terang Mortlake coach Lisa Arundell conceded the evenness of the competition means the Bloods, who dropped from fifth to sixth, could rue the slip up.
"We've backed ourselves into a corner a little bit," she said.
"We have to fight ourselves out of it if we want to play finals.
"We have to bank a few wins to stay in the finals race."
Arundell said the Bloods were below their best but the Seagulls' defence, led by former league best and fairest winner Carly Watson, proved the difference at Gardens Oval.
"It was a scrappy game and we didn't adjust to the (windy) weather the same as they did," she said.
The Bloods lost the versatile Jacqui Arundell to an ankle injury early on while Seagull Chelsea McMahon was also hurt.
