Parking meters have been switched off at the Lee Breakwater in an effort to improve the city's visitor experience.

In a landmark agreement, Glenelg Shire Council and the state government are scrapping all day parking tickets across the boat parking precinct to provide for growing demand of recreational fishers and their oversized vehicles.

Council's local laws team currently manage the parking meters, located at the boat park areas, with people given the option of an on-site all day pass, or purchasing of an annual pass.

Glenelg Shire mayor Anita Rank said the new free all day parking arrangement would provide greater flexibility for visitors and locals alike.

"The Portland foreshore and marina amenities are some of the busiest in regional Victoria," she said.

"Each and every day keen anglers are travelling hundreds of kilometres to use these popular amenities and fish in our local waters. We want this experience to be an enjoyable one, not a visit masked by watching the clock aware of the pending parking deadline.

Cr Rank said there was still local laws in the area with restrictions on parking on grass in the wet winter months and the banning of caravans, recreational vehicles and cars without trailers in the boat ramp area.
