The Blues mentor had set a task for his side to secure 11 wins this season, which it managed to complete with a 17.8 (110) to 8.8 (56) victory over Camperdown in round 12.
"Our first goal was to win 11 games because in the past that has guaranteed you make finals and we were working to that goal from round one and we hit that this week," O'Brien said.
"We have ticked off the first milestone and having achieved that we will start looking further afield."
But the second-placed Blues are not about to become complacent on O'Brien's watch.
"You can never be comfortable (with the ladder position) but with only one loss out of 12 games you've got to be reasonably happy," he said.
"But there is six games to go and we've got to make the most of them. We've given ourselves a chance to work for a top-three finish."

The Blues play fellow top-three sides Koroit and North Warrnambool Eagles in the next two weeks before Port Fairy, Hamilton Kangaroos, South Warrnambool and Portland in a tough run home towards finals.
Camperdown co-coach Neville Swayn said his side would search for a better effort after being blown away in a wet encounter at Leura Oval.
"We will take a lot out of the game but we need to be more consistent across four quarters and that is the next step we have to take, especially when the grounds are heavy," he said.
But Swayn said it was still not an easy problem for the Magpies to fix quickly if the wet weather continues.
"It's hard when we have been asking a lot of younger guys who are playing against bigger bodies when the ground is heavy but we will keep chipping away at it as it's all we can do," he said.
Camperdown's tough run continues with matches against North Warrnambool Eagles, Port Fairy and Hamilton Kangaroos.
The seventh-placed Magpies are eight points behind South Warrnambool (fifth), which they play in round 16, and only four behind the Kangaroos (sixth).
