The Kangaroos held off a fast-finishing Portland to secure back-to-back wins for the second time this season.
"It keeps our season alive and this was certainly an important game for us," Dunn said of the 9.10 (64) to 7.8 (50) victory.
"We are getting closer to balancing our ledger and get back into the positives so we can tick that off the list.
"Going into break it was 4-7 and that's been a focus in July to get ourselves back into the positive.
"We want to try put destiny in our own hands and winning games is part of that. Our best is good enough to play finals but we have got to get more consistent."

Hamilton's five victories are split into two clumps with a three-game streak from round three to five helping kick-start its season.
The Kangaroos' recent run of form comes off the back of a five-game losing streak.
Dunn was pleased with how his side, which is now a game behind South Warrnambool in sixth, was starting to work well as a collective.
"We probably had even contribution, our ball movement was good in the first half and our one per centers and all little things were working well," he said,
"We combined well as a team and our forward entries were good and our forwards are working well together."
