Worst hit was the Hamilton area where unit controller Bruce Farquharson said a team of volunteers, emergency services and residents cleared more than 100 trees from roads, brought down by strong winds.
"You could tell when it started at 6.30pm last night that the calls were moving east, and they just kept coming, the pager went crazy," Mr Farquharson said.
"It's the busiest we've been since St Patrick's Day last year."
Despite the number of trees down, he said no property was damaged and no motorists had collided with trees on roads.
Heywood SES unit controller Charlie Debonoalso said volunteers removed eight trees from roads and responded to a leaking roof at a childcare centre.
"It's been quite a while since we had a big project like that in Heywood," Mr Debonoalso said.
Meanwhile, Warrnambool SES volunteers were trimming a tree at a Lava Street property on Thursday morning which had toppled over and brought down a telephone line.
Earlier: Warrnambool's State Emergency Service unit volunteers was twice called out last night - to a flooded garage and a fallen tree.
Warrnambool controller Giorgio Palmeri said an alert was raised about 7pm Wednesday night to a flooded garage at a Taits Road home in Warrnambool.
"Water was going through the garage and the drain could not keep up. There was a pit in the garage and we used a submersible pump to clear that," he said.
"We used sandbags to stop the water entering the garage."
Mr Palmeri said there was a tree down about 25 kilometres south of Mortlake at 7.25pm.
"The tree was impacting on traffic and locals had started clearing the road by the time we arrived," he said.
"We made that safe and then packed up."
Mr Palmeri said said the severe weather warning was still in place for the south-west and requested motorists drive to the road and weather conditions.
"Park cars away from trees and under cover if possible. We just want everyone to be safe," he said.
