Warrnambool police Senior Constable Greg Kew said the owners of the damaged fence were away and returned to find the damage.
"They were away from 11am Saturday until 4pm Sunday. It's probably happened overnight Saturday," he said.
"The commodore just missed a concrete power pole, by inches, and has then gone through a fence before taking off."
Senior Constable Kew said a headlight and paint were left behind at the accident scene just north of the Hyland Street and Lava Street intersection.
"Inquiries have led us to identify the offending vehicle was a Bermuda Blue VT Commodore a model between 1997 and 2000 - it's dark blue," he said.
"We're asking that anyone who knows about the accident, or if they have knowledge of a dark blue VT Commodore with front-end damage, specifically a broken passenger side headlight, to contact the Warrnambool police station," he said.
