With champion jumps jockey Steven Pateman in the saddle Killarney Kid defeated Euroman by five lengths with Mr Coyne back in third place.
Pateman said Killarney Kid was awesome in winning the jumps feature in atrocious conditions.
"Before the race Killarney Kid had his doubters," he said.
"The so-called smarties were saying he would not handle a really heavy track and they were proven wrong. But he loved the heavy track.
"He's a great jumper and has the Patrick Payne polish.
"I was always travelling well and thought I was the one to beat in the run.
"I'm very fortunate to be able to ride a lot of Patrick's jumpers.
"His record as a jumps trainer is incredible."
Pateman said he was looking forward to riding Killarney Kid in the $250,000 Grand National Hurdle at Sandown on August 4.
Pateman and Payne joined forces to win this year's Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase with Zed Em.
