Taliah Mayne's family travelled three hours from Melbourne to Warrnambool to celebrate her 13^th birthday party at the Lady Bay Resort function room.

Her parents, Sarah and Heath, who recently made the move to Warrnambool with the kids, said they didn't realise when they hired a DJ complete with lights and a smoke machine it would turn the night from disco to devo.

"The smoke machine wasn't on for long, I think one puff and it set it off," mum Sarah Mayne said.

"We didn't realise it would set the alarm off.

"Everyone's come down from Melbourne for this night."

Taliah's night wasn't altogether ruined, scoring a firefighter's hat and a photo with fireys from the Warrnambool brigade.

Warrnambool firefighter Paul Messer said he wasn't sure if the resort would be charged a call-out fee.

"If it's a false alarm caused by negligence there will be a fee for the use of CFA appliances, but if it's a genuine incident or accident there's no fee of course," he said.

"It's up to the officer's discretion as to whether it's an incident or a false alarm."

The party was able to resume shortly afterwards.

A Lady Bay Resort staff member said they were looking into the incident.

"The events of the evening were caused by the unauthorised and non-communicated use of a smoke machine in the venue," the staff member said.

"We regret the disruption that it caused the diners and guests of the resort."
