A British War Medal from 1914-1920, a Victory Medal, Coronation of King George V Medal and Rising Sun slouch hat pin were located on a Colac man who was arrested and remanded in custody for possessing stolen goods.
The 32-year-old was remanded in custody and will appear at Colac Magistrates' Court on July 15.
"We would like to get the items returned to their owner," First Constable Grant Suckling of Colac police said.
"We know who they belonged to, we went on ancestry.com and managed to find the male's war service records, but we're yet to find information on their next of kin.
"The Colac man was located in possession of these items and other items and is not being forthcoming about where he stole them."
Police ask locals to check that they haven't had any medals stolen.
"We're appealing to anyone that does have their grandfather's war medals to check if they've still got them, they might not be aware they are missing," First Constable Suckling said.
"We can't find any record of them from recent burglaries.
"It's obvious that they have been worn because there's a safety pin attached to them, so they've been worn at some stage, perhaps an Anzac Day service."
Anyone with information is asked to contact First Constable Grant Suckling at Colac police station or Crime Stoppers.
