The first sale commencing the new financial year resulted in agents yarding less numbers, although the quality was a little better across the yearling and grown categories, with cows again representing a large percentage of the sale. A full field of buyers were present and keen to fill their orders as export cattle are beginning to be scarce. One additional processor was unable to enter the market in the cow run as strong competition resulted in some significant price lifts. Feedlot and restockers again dominated the small yearling category, with feeder steers and heifers making from 247c to 265c/kg. Restockers stepped into the plainer portion yearlings that sold from 60c to 226c/kg. A few pens of grown cattle were offered, with the C3 steer portion making from 272c to 280c/kg. Better numbers of heifers were available to processors today, with the beef portion receiving from 270c to 275c, while the dairy heifers with cover sold from 214c to 238c/kg. The cow run created some excitement, with prices increasing up to 32c/kg. Heavy 4 score beef cows lifted 25c, making from 248c to 265c/kg. The best of the dairy portion made 238c, increasing 31c/kg. The lighter cows lifted up to 27c, receiving from 180c to 218c and the very poor portion received from 128c to 178c/kg. A good quality run of bulls were available to the usual buying group selling in a strong market. Bulls with shape sold from 240c to 262c, lifting 11c, with the better dairy portion making up to 230c to be 38c/kg dearer.

NARACOORTE CATTLE
July 2. Yarding: 506. Change: down 211.
Numbers eased as agents offered 506 head of live weight and open auction cattle. These sold to the usual array of trade and processor buyers, with feeder orders and an additional restocker helping to add strength to the market. Quality continues to be mixed, varying from heavy prime bullocks down to light weight stores, as the market returned vendors pricing from firm to mainly dearer. Yearling steers to the trade lifted 10c to 12c as they sold from 297c to 328c, with the yearling heifers, also to the trade, making from 250c to 310c/kg.
Feeders operated on steers from 265c to 330c and on heifers from 239c to 292c/kg. Restockers turned steers back out from 230c to 283c and heifers to 215c/kg. Grown steers and bullocks were small in number as they sold from 288c to 320c, with grown heifers to the trade making from 185c to 305c/kg. There was feeder interest in lighter grown heifers from 256c to 292c.
