Five-thousand litres of a liquid used to repair roads has spilled from a storage tank at Moyne Shire Council's depot in Macarthur.
Council chief executive Bill Millard said on Tuesday afternoon that officers were cleaning up the spill, which had also leaked onto Russel Street.
"Council officers have used sand to contain and soak up a spill of emulsion liquid," Mr Millard said.
"It is believed around 5,000 litres of the liquid, used to repair cracks in bitumen, inadvertently leaked from a storage tank within the depot."
The council reported the spill to WorkSafe and the Environmental Protection Authority, which provided advice by phone, while RSP Environmental Services is onsite assisting with the clean-up.
"The product is not listed as a dangerous good or hazardous substance and the council is investigating the cause of the tank leak," Mr Millard said.
