Injuries and unavailability have cursed the Saints this Hampden league season with McLaren still yet to have his full team available.
And on Saturday the issues rose to the surface once again before his side's 20.19 (139) to 6.5 (41) victory over Terang Mortlake.
After declaring he would field a full side on Friday, McLaren was again making last-minute changes as Ben Dobson (knee), Lachie Rhook (shoulder) and Tom Mugavin (ill) were late outs.

But the two-time premiership coach, who is confident all three will come in to play Hamilton Kangaroos next weekend, said he was still pleased with how his side was tracking.
"We like being a hard team no matter who we're playing and we did that well so that was the main thing," he said.
"We haven't been at our best recently but we're starting to build form and hopefully we can step it up the next couple of weeks and keep heading in the right direction."
The Saints coach will also have former AFL player and star off-season recruit Tom Couch, who had his girlfriend, American tennis star and world number 35 Danielle Collins on the sidelines, on Saturday, in the side "for an extended period of time".
McLaren praised his forwards' efforts against the Bloods after seven of the side's 10 goal-kickers bagged multiple majors.
"It was nice to have Sam (Dobson) back - he missed a few weeks and is not 100 per cent yet but signs are there that he is not far away - as he draws attention from defenders and the others pick up the load," he said.
"Jarrod (Korewha) had 10 shots at goal, (Jeremy) Hausler is dangerous when he is down there, Will Couch is starting to get into some form.
"And with Tom coming back in, he and 'Gowy' (James Gow) spent time as forwards and so did James North and they joined well with all our small forwards."
Korewha finished with five, Will Couch, North, Seamus Brady, Hausler, Dobson and Gow all kicked two and Tom Couch added one major to the Saints' final tally of 20.
