The Bombers held off a fast-finishing Timboon Demons at Reid Oval on Saturday, winning 14.13 (97) to 14.12 (96).
Their 42-point three-quarter-time lead evaporated as the Demons piled on seven goals to one in the final term.
The Demons cut the margin to one point with 30 seconds left.
"To their credit they fought back and we were lucky in end," Chatfield said.

Chatfield said it was good reward for the Bombers' players who had battled through some big losses to the top teams in the past month. Kyle Ryan kicked seven goals in the club's second win of the season.
East Warrnambool sits in ninth spot ahead of bottom-placed Dennington which is yet to win a game.
