The 35-year-old had a tough day on California's Pebble Beach Golf Course, shooting a three-over 75 to drop to plus-one on the card after 36 holes.
Leishman, who finished with four bogeys and one birdie from his second round of 18, is tied for 47th with nine other golfers including fellow countrymen Jason Day.
MORE LEISHMAN:
The World No.21 is 10 shots adrift of American leader Gary Woodland, who is nine-under after shooting a round of 65 to storm past overnight leader England's Justin Rose (seven-under).
Rose only dropped one stroke on his overnight total after shooting a round of 71.
The best placed Australian is Adam Scott, who is perfectly placed to chase for a victory at three-under in a tie for 11th spot.
