The Country Fire Authority has now taken over the handling of the investigation.
Friday: Police are investigating the cause of a fire which completely gutted a home in Tyrendarra overnight.
Portland police Sergeant Daniel Lehman said a Country Fire Authority investigator and Portland police crime investigation unit detectives would examine the scene today.
He said emergency services were alerted at 11.30pm Thursday to the house fire on a property along the Tyrendarra-Ettrick Road.
He said the male resident was out hunting when the fire started and he arrived home as CFA volunteers were fighting the blaze.
The fibro home was completely destroyed.
"The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage," he said.
"Detectives and fire investigators will look at the scene this morning to try and determine a cause.
"No one was hurt. It's a rented property at the bottom of Mount Clay," he said.
Anyone with information is requested to contact the Portland police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
