AFL Western District operations coordinator Mathew Milne confirmed the league had called for an independent review of the half-time incident involving non-playing members of each club at Allansford Recreation Reserve.

"The league asked for a please explain from the clubs and based on the information they received they made a group decision to investigate the incident with an AFL Victoria investigation officer," he said.

Milne said the independent investigator would soon begin to start looking into the alleged incident.

The formal independent investigation comes after WDFNL president Michael Harrison requested AFL Western District seek information from the two clubs before the next step was decided.

Nirranda coach Shane Threlfall said after the incident the umpires spoke to him and indicated the game could be called off if emotions did not settle down.

"I think they did a great job and things calmed down in the second half - everything was played in great spirit after that," he said.

Allansford mentor Ben Price said he was "rattled" at half-time and didn't address his players for more than 10 minutes, but agreed the spirit of the game improved after the main break.

"Compared to how the first half was played, the second one was much better, even though there were two send-offs," Price said.

Nirranda, who was leading by 37 points at half-time, would go on to win the match by 82 points.
