A cold front approached western Victoria overnight before sliding south-eastwards across the state during Monday.
Damaging north to north-westerly winds, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h, are expected to develop about elevated parts.
Wind gusts about the Alpine peaks may reach up to 110 km/h during Monday morning.
Damaging wind gusts to 90 km/h are also possible about exposed coasts as a west to north-westerly change moves over thes state this morning.
Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds over western parts of the warning area during Monday morning and over eastern parts during Monday afternoon.
Locations which may be affected include the Grampians, the Otways, Daylesford, Mount Baw Baw, Falls Creek, Mount Hotham and Mount Buller.
A 113km/h wind gust was recorded at Mount William near Halls Gap at 1.38am.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
- Keep clear of fallen power lines.
South-west sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, rain and showers and strong north-westerly winds are expected during Monday morning and afternoon.
There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.
The Bureau of Meteorology says there's a high (70%) chance of showers this morning across the south-west with the possibility of a thunderstorm.
Just after 7am in Warrnambool it was 13.7 degrees but the wind chill made it feel like 4.8 and showers had just started falling.
It will be a mostly sunny afternoon.
Winds will be northerly 30 to 40 km/h turning west to north-westerly 35 to 45 km/h in the morning then becoming north-westerly 20 to 25 km/h in the early afternoon.
Warrnambool is expecting a top of 17 degrees, Hamilton 15, Colac 15, Ararat 15, Casterton 17, Mortlake 17, Heywood 16, Portland 17, Port Fairy 17, Terang 15 and Camperdown 14.
