Emergency services have raced to the Cobden District Health Services charity shop in Curdies Street on Friday morning after a fire was reported.

Cobden police Sergeant Heather Morris said workers had attended the shop early Friday and had flicked on a switch they thought was for a heater.

The switch was to a hot plate and there was a cardboard box on the appliance.
"The op shop filled with smoke and the alarm was raised at 10.20am," she said.
"The Cobden CFA unit attended and fans were used to ventilate the building. There was more smoke than anything else," she said.
