The Seahawks, led by 42 points from star Xavier Blount, toppled the ladder-leaders Western Port Steelers by 16 points on Sunday to keep contact with the upper half of the ladder after 10 rounds.

"Every game counts as it is a log jam from first to eighth," Gainey said of the importance of keeping the winning streak alive against any team.

"You have to take it one game at a time, take care of what team is ahead on the fixture and let the other teams play it out and take what comes in your favour.

"Judging by our last few games against those top teams the teams in the middle of the road are the ones that are taking it up top us.

"We are not in a cupcake league and every team is competitive. Given the day the team who plays the best will always get the best outcome."

Despite Blount dominating the stats sheet, Gainey praised the unity his side showed against the Steelers, who had lost just three games previously.

"They had a big guard, who is damaging, and Simon O'Keefe and Nick Alexandrou did a good job on him defensively," he said.

"Alex Gynes (13 points, seven rebounds and two steals) did his normal thing and Ollie Bidmade was good too.

"We had a lot of contributors. Liam Osborne came on the court and kept the run going when guys needed a spell. Adam Lawson got a few good defensive acts. It was an all round team victory."

Gainey said Blount's impressive points total was thanks to the team sticking to the plan.

"It was really good ball movement from side to side, making their defence work and that got 'X' (Blount) open," he said.

"They didn't adjust well to our offence and X is a hot hand and he was going to keep going back to go to the well until it goes dry."

The seventh-placed Seahawks have another road trip next weekend, this time to Traralgon to take on the bottom-placed La Trobe City Energy.

The Mermaids were unable to replicate the men's heroics as they went down by 53 points against second-placed Sunbury Jets on Sunday.

Abbey Sutherland led the way for the Mermaids with 13 points, three rebounds and assists. Star Amy Wormald was kept quiet on the scoring front to only register six points.

But she was handy elsewhere with 11 rebounds - 10 of those in defence - three assists and two steals.

Louise Brown's side will travel to Bentleigh next week to take on McKinnon Cougars.
